Maintenance in Monmouth - Wonastow Road Pumping Station
Wonastow Pumping StationLate last year Caldicot & Wentlooge IDB secured the contract to maintain Monmouthshire County Council's new Wonastow Road Pumping Station. This Welsh Assembly Government, grant funded, £1.8 million pound project was completed and opened in July 2007.

Since November 2007, C&WIDB has been responsible for all maintenance work on the Wonastow Road Pumping Station – this entails regular checks on all equipment and constant trash-screen clearance, ensuring free flow of water. In the event of an emergency the sophisticated telemetry system at the Pumping Station relays messages via the internet to an emergency number at CWLIDB headquarters in Newport. As recognised experts in water level management, asking the C&WIDB to maintain this highly important, strategic Pumping Station was a natural choice for Monmouthshire County Council.

The Wonastow Flood Alleviation Scheme, of which the Pumping Station is part, now protects the many properties in the Drybridge Street and Wonastow Road area of Monmouth, bringing peace of mind to the residents and business communities living near the River Monnow. Previously this area was at risk of flooding by surface water run-off during and after heavy rainfall when the natural, existing Drybridge Community Pond over flowed.

This Community Pond has always accepted any excess volume of water from Wonastow Brook, which runs along Wonastow Road collecting surface water from the surrounding developed area. When the level of the Monnow River rises due to heavy rainfall, the outfall of Wonastow Brook into the river is sealed by a flap valve which is closed by pressure of water. This closure diverts the water into the Drybridge Community Pond. The installation of the new Pumping Station has meant that water levels in the pond have been monitored by sensors - when safe water levels are exceeded, one or more of the pumps in the Pumping Station can be automatically activated. The excess water is then pumped from the pond, up through the pumping station and out into the River Monnow. Eliminating any risk of flooding in the local area. If a power failure occurs, there is a backup generator which will automatically cut in, allowing the pumps to continue to operate.
