What does the IDB do
The LWIDB is responsible for water level management and maintenance of watercourses in a defined geographical area. The area protected by the Board is inter-linked and upland by nature, linear in shape, covering mainly the Monmouth catchments and surrounds through to Pontrilas in the south and eastwards towards Hereford. Predominantly rural in nature the area is recognised as being one of outstanding natural beauty, steeped in history with its many monuments, castles and churches.

The Board is responsible for some 3,523 hectares and maintains in length 32.9kms of adopted watercourses. Broadly speaking these watercourses discharge in a south or south-westerly direction towards Monmouth and ultimately discharge into the river Wye.

The Board's drainage system consists of three distinct parts: the river Trothy system, the river Monnow system and the various brook systems southwest of Hereford.

Expertise
The Board utilises the expertise of the Caldicot & Wentlooge Levels IDB to carry out its maintenance programme. Experts in their field of Water Level Management, the CWLIDB is able to offer its resources on a cost effective basis, to the benefit of all the ratepayers. All maintenance works are carried out taking into consideration the environment and allowing conservation to flourish, not forgetting the vital and ongoing land drainage function that the watercourses perform within the various catchments.

Conservation Policy
The environmental importance of the operational area of the LWIDB has long been recognised and the Board has always ensured that its operations do not have a adverse environmental impact.

A formal Conservation Policy and Strategy is being developed in consultation with the Countryside Council for Wales and Natural England.

Water Level Management Plan
Since 2006 the LWIDB has been administered by the Caldicot & Wentlooge Levels IDB who are in the process of creating a formal document for the Board's area in the form of a Water Level Management Plan, which has not been previously undertaken.
